Artist Statement
I use portrait photography, handmade masks, and headdresses to represent narratives of vulnerability and protection of the subjected self. Using myself as the focal point, I re-imagine my experiences from my upbringing in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, such as the constant surveillance, repression, and lack of agency, to redefine these moments and move beyond them. Through this rebellious process, I create images with my photography where masking and suppression offer the viewer the chance at being visible and invisible, while in safe environments for the subjected self.
